David Zapatka has won a 2002 National Sports EMMY for his work and contributions to NBC Sports for coverage of the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. The award, presented at the Sports Emmy Awards in New York in April, 2003, was one of 13 awarded to NBC for 2002. Zapatka's contribution was as "Electronic Camera Person" for Outstanding Technical Team-Studio for NBC's nightly studio show hosted by Bob Costas.
This is Zapatka's first National Emmy win. He was nominated for an award in 2001 for outstanding cinematography for his work on the "Martha Stewart Living" show, and he was part of the Dateline NBC technical team that won a News Emmy in 1996 for coverage of the murder of a Northwest Airlines baggage handler reported by Dennis Murphy.
While in local news in Providence, Zapatka won two regional Emmys for news coverage in 1989 and 1990.
